8th Orlen Cup is behind us

The stars were great during Orlen Cup, which was held on 4th of February 2023 in Atlas Arena, accompanied by 6000 spectators in the stands.

Fast track, great audience, perfect organization – that all always means that invitations to Orlen Cup are accepted by huge stars. Ewa Swoboda wasn't hiding the fact that she loved this hall, this audience.

The first final was 60-metre women hurdle race. Pia Skrzyszowska, European Champion and the leader of worldwide lists (7,84), was dreaming about beating Zofia Bielczyk's 7,77 record. Pia ran great. The moment she crossed the finish line, there was an announcement that she broke Polish record. Unfortunately, the result was corrected to... 7,78. Pia was pleased with the result, though. She beat her personal best by 0.06. Michelle Jenneke from Australia was the second – 7,98, that's the result that is better than her personal best by 0.01. The first results reassured everybody that the track in Łódź is incredibly fast.
–  I had a slow start from the block and I think that is the moment I lost that 0,01 – Pia Skrzyszowska said. – I am highly motivated now for European Championships in Istanbul. I realized that Polish record is within my reach. 0,10 to the World Record. I am not saying anything out loud.

Everybody was waiting with a great interest for Ewa Swoboda's start. Polish and Italian Zaynab Dosso scored the same result of 7,14 and referee had to compare both times in terms of seeking the difference in thousands of second. Our representative won by maybe a millimetre.
– My knee hurts, but it's nothing serious – Ewa Swoboda said after the run. – There is no chill, maybe there is no calm. I find it frustrating when people ask me: "When under 7 seconds?". I think my start was weak. I got myself together a moment later. Maybe I will be winning with thousands of a second differences from now on.

In 60 metre men hurdle race Roger Iribarne from Cuba won (7,55). Jakub Szymański was very close to him, almost elbow to elbow, but he lost with a minimal difference (7,59). In the top three, there was also Milan Trajkowić from Cyprus. Damian Czykier (7,67) took fifth place.

Olympic Champion and Indoor World Champions Marcel Jacobs (personal best 6,41) was favourite to win in 60-metre run. He won with the time of 6,57, but Damian Kopeć ran great as well. He finished with 6,60 and with that, he crossed the minimum required for participation in European Championships.

In high jump, 35-year-old Ukrainian Oleg Procenko was the star. He trains in Łódź in RKS facilities under the supervision of Lech Krakowiak. In the first trial he lost the height of 2,15 which was surprising. He didn't manage to beat 2,20. Norbert Kobielski jumped better. He finished the event on the height of 2,23. He won it, but he did not jump 2,26. The second place was taken by Italian Marco Fassinotti (2,20). Interesting event, but it ended quite quickly.

5,87 is still the record of Orlen Cup, and it belongs to Piotr Lisek. Nobody jumped higher than this on Saturday. John Obiena won this event (5,77) before Sam Kendricks (5,70) and Piotr Lisek (5,70). This is Piotr's the best score this year. Talented Michał Gawenda did not manage to beat the height of 5,51. He finished the event with 5,36. Lack of form can be seen in Paweł Wojciechowski's performance. He dropped out at the same height. KCLightfoot lost 5,36 and resigned from the event.
– I jumped 5,80 a long time ago, I am well-prepared for it and I need to prove it. –  Piotr Lisek says. – I hope I will put joy in your hearts in the future. I can go to European Championships using ranking status, but I want to jump the minimum. If I go there, I will fight for the medal. Maybe not gold, but medal.

Konrad Bukowiecki was warming himself slowly – in the first trial he crossed 19 metres. Tomas Stanek took the position of the leader of shot put event – 20,85 in the second trial. 20,42 was scored by Bob Bertemes from Luxembourg. Konrad Bukowiecki was improving his results every time he threw, but with his last trial he was able to get himself to the podium – 20,71. Mesud Pezer from Bosnia was the second – 20,75. Michał Haratyk took fifth place (20,17).
